Shipping Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) with LVK: Requirements and Setup

LVK can ship products classified as hazardous materials (Hazmat). Hazmat is defined as a material "capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported in commerce under the federal hazardous materials transportation law." To ensure compliance, LVK requires specific documentation and product setup before shipping.

Initial Requirements and Account Setup

Before LVK can begin shipping your Hazmat products, you must complete the following steps to ensure proper handling and compliance.

1. Provide the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

You must provide your Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) file as part of the receiving guidelines. An MSDS is a document containing information on the potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity, and environmental) and how to safely work with the chemical product. This sheet should be provided by your vendor.

LVK is required to have a copy of all MSDS sheets on file for any Hazmat items handled in their facilities.

2. LVK Product Analysis and Account Update

Once LVK receives your MSDS file, they will analyze the product type to confirm if it qualifies for Hazmat shipping. If applicable, the support team will set up your account accordingly.

Steps to Setup Your Hazmat Product on the App

This setup is crucial for LVK to map your order to the correct shipping carriers, add corresponding shipping labels, and ship to the correct zones.

Hazmat settings depend on the product type and sometimes don't need to be marked as "hazmat" in the system, they may just need to be mapped to a particular carrier. This setting, although available,  should not be set by you (the client) unless otherwise directed by our CSM team.

  1. Log into LVK and click on Products in the left-hand navigation menu.
  2. Click on the product you need to mark as Hazmat.
  3. Select  "Is Hazmat" on the right side of the product page.

Hazmat Kit SKU Setup

If you are adding a hazmat SKU to a kit, you must open a ticket with the support team HERE so they can set up the SKU on the backend.

mceclip3.pngShipping Restrictions and Additional Notes

LVK has important restrictions concerning Hazmat shipments:

Restriction Category Details
Shipping Methods
  • Dependent on the products' MSDS; any shipping method restrictions such as expedited or international shipping should be addressed with the support team during set up.
Shipping Zones
  • Most carriers restrict shipping hazmat items to domestic zone 9 destinations, PO Boxes and  military addresses; it is common to have restrictions on international shipping for hazmat products; these requirements are dependent on the products' MSDS information and will be discussed during set up
Costs
  • In most cases, you will be provided a specific hazmat shipping rate card inclusive of any additional hazmat fees that may apply

Hazmat Returns Policy

LVK accepts Hazmat returns at their fulfillment centers but cannot provide support for Hazmat return orders with LVK-generated labels. Hazmat orders require specific carrier labels and restrictions.

If your customers can return Hazmat items:

  • They must have them drop off the package at their local carrier's facility, or
  • They must generate their own labeling.

LVK is not responsible for violations or costs associated with return packages.
