Shipping Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) with LVK: Requirements and Setup

LVK can ship products classified as hazardous materials (Hazmat). Hazmat is any material capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported in commerce under federal hazardous materials transportation law. LVK requires specific documentation and product setup before these items can ship.

Initial Requirements and Account Setup

Complete both steps below before LVK can begin shipping your Hazmat products.

Step 1: Provide Your Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

Submit your Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) as part of the Receiving Guidelines. An MSDS lists the health, fire, reactivity, and environmental hazards of a chemical product and explains how to handle it safely. Your vendor provides this document.

LVK is required to keep a copy of the MSDS on file for every Hazmat item handled in its facilities.

Step 2: LVK Product Analysis and Account Update

Once LVK receives your MSDS, the team analyzes the product type to confirm whether it qualifies for Hazmat shipping. If it does, LVK Support updates your account settings.

How to Set Up a Hazmat Product in LVK

This setup lets LVK map your order to the correct shipping carrier, apply the corresponding shipping labels, and ship to permitted zones.

Important

Hazmat settings depend on the product type. Some products do not need the "Is Hazmat" flag at all and only need to be mapped to a particular carrier. Complete the steps below only when the LVK CSM team directs you to.

  1. Log in to your account and click Products in the left-hand navigation menu.
  2. Click the product you need to mark as Hazmat.
  3. Select Is Hazmat on the right side of the product page.

To add a Hazmat SKU to a kit, open a support ticket so the LVK team can set up the SKU on the backend.

Hazmat Shipping Restrictions

These restrictions apply to every Hazmat shipment:

Restriction Category Details
Shipping Methods Available methods depend on the product's MSDS. Discuss any restrictions on expedited or international shipping with LVK Support during setup.
Shipping Zones Most carriers restrict Hazmat shipments to domestic zone 9 destinations, PO Boxes, and military addresses. International shipping restrictions are common. Your specific requirements depend on the product's MSDS and are confirmed during setup.
Costs In most cases LVK provides a Hazmat shipping rate card that includes any additional Hazmat fees.

Hazmat Returns Policy

LVK accepts Hazmat returns at its fulfillment centers but cannot support Hazmat return orders using LVK-generated labels, because Hazmat shipments require specific carrier labels and carry shipping restrictions.

If you allow customers to return Hazmat items, they must either:

  • Drop the package off at their local carrier facility, or
  • Generate their own Hazmat shipping label.

LVK is not responsible for violations or costs associated with return packages.

See the LVK Terms of Service for more information, or contact your LVK account manager to get started.
